Explore The Federal Hill Neighborhood, A Food-Lovers Paradise

Only a five-minute drive from our apartments in Providence, Rhode Island is a century-old neighborhood spanning Atwells Avenue and surrounding streets.

The neighborhood is known for offering a sense of warmth, and visitors can find an array of restaurants.

We're talking about Federal Hill, and it was largely settled by Italian-American immigrants in the early 1900s.

Highlights include:

Tony's Colonial has offered the finest imported and domestic Italian foods since 1952. It's known as the best destination of its type in New England, and the friendly staff is glad to answer any questions. The selection includes a wide array of gourmet pasta and olive oils, as well as delicious chef-prepared Italian dishes.

Founded in 1898, Gasbarro's is one of the top retailers of Italian wines in the United States. It originally featured six homemade wines, and today there are dozens to choose from. Options include Felsina Fontalloro Toscana, Uccelliera Costabate, and Castello di Farnetella Lucilla Toscana.

Voted the "Best Italian Restaurant in Providence," Pane E Vino offers Joseph Dequattro's delicious recipes. He states that the meals are fresh, simple, and honest, and they're made from local ingredients. The restaurant offers attentive service and a quaint atmosphere with flower arrangements and dim lighting. The menu includes ravioli di aragosta, gnocchi quattro formaggi, and rigatoni del cardinale.

Owned by the Tarro brothers, Siena serves authentic Tuscan cuisine in a warm and lively atmosphere. The brothers have deep roots in the city's Italian-American community, and both have spent years working in the food industry. The restaurant has been recognized by the Providence Journal, and meals include frutti di mare, pollo piccata, and brasato.
